In NATO circles, the export variations, Mi-25 and Mi-35, are denoted with a letter suffix as “Hind D” and “Hind E”. Soviet pilots known as the Mi-24 the “flying tank” (летающий танк; letayushchiy tank), a time period used traditionally with the well-known World Conflict II Soviet Il-2 Shturmovik armored floor assault plane. Extra widespread unofficial nicknames have been “Crocodile” (Крокодил; Krokodil), because of the helicopter’s camouflage scheme and “Consuming Glass” (Стакан; Stakan), due to the flat glass plates that encompass earlier Mi-24 variants’ cockpits.
