GTA 6 release date and latest map, character, environment and console news supported. Everything you need to know about the next Grand Theft Auto for PS and Xbox.
When does GTA VI come out and how will it look? On which consoles will it be playable and in which city will it be set? In late-2019 the new Grand Theft Auto continues to be the most anticipated and talked about game.
Rockstar Games hasn’t officially announced it yet, but rumors about the release date, maps and characters of the next GTA have been going on for some time. The latest news about the possibility that the game will only arrive on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Scarlett, and is set in the 70s and 80s inspired by the Narcos series, have rekindled the curiosity of fans.
Now it’s been 5 years since the release of GTA V, the last chapter of the Rockstar saga that with over 80 million copies sold worldwide is considered one of the biggest hits of recent years.
Although to date the development company continues to keep the secrecy on GTA 6, focusing rather on Red Dead Redemption 2 released in October 2019 and updates to GTA Online, there is no doubt that the action-adventure franchise will continue with a sixth chapter full of important news regarding maps, characters and gameplay.
If you also look forward to the official release date of the new GTA and want to stay up to date, below we have collected all the news and rumors that have emerged so far. Here’s what you need to know about GTA VI.
NB: All the information below is the result of rumors, rumors, speculation, interviews and leaks leaked online. For the official news we are waiting for the announcement of the development company.
GTA 6: The Announced News
A few months ago the news leaked that GTA 6 will bring players back to some places already known to fans of the series. According to what emerged, the successor to GTA 5 will not be released on PS4 and Xbox One but will be an exclusive of the new next-gen consoles expected for 2020/2021. To report it was an alleged former developer of Rockstar Games in a post that was later removed from the company.
The mole wrote that the game will develop in at least two cities where the player can move freely, and that the protagonist will be an aspiring drug lord who will take his first steps in Liberty City and then move to Vice City, cities that will be linked by extensive campaigns.
These rumors are back in vogue these days, becoming a source of discussion on the popular video game forum ResetEra. The sources that revealed the details of GTA 6 would be two former editors of PC Games and Kotaku. Here are the announced news:
- The code name of GTA VI is Project Americas
- The game will be set in the seventies and eighties, between Vice City and a city inspired by Rio De Janeiro, with linear missions to Liberty City
- There will be only one protagonist and it will not be a woman
- The protagonist will be called Ricardo, an aspiring drug lord who begins to take his first steps as a cocaine smuggler
- The story will be strongly inspired by Netflix’s Narcos, with the rise of the main character in the world of drug trafficking and the construction of his empire
- The gameplay will be a mix of realism and arcade, different from that of Red Dead Redemption 2
- The characters will speak their mother tongue, so there will be many subtitles
- Weapons and other equipment will be transportable in your car
- Exclusive release expected on new Xbox Scarlett and PlayStation 5 gaming platforms
GTA 6: Release Date
To date we do not know a release date to mark on the calendar, despite rumors and rumors more or less reliable have spread the news that the company is working to develop GTA 6 already from 2015.
According to an article by The Know bounced on foreign specialized magazines, Grand Theft Auto 6 will be released in 2022, will be set in two locations, Vice City and South America, and could have for the first time a female protagonist. The site, which in the past has already correctly revealed the details of Dark Souls 3 before the official release, cites an “internal source”, which states that internally Rockstar refers to GTA 6 as Project Americas.
According to others, instead, GTA 6 will be released next year, then in 2020, and will act as a bridge between the current consoles and those of the next generation PS5 and Xbox Two.
Four years after PS4 Pro and 3 years after Xbox One X the world will be ready for new gaming platforms and also to welcome the extraordinary novelties of GTA VI in terms of gameplay, graphics, missions, interactivity and characters. The ad hoc launch of the game Rockstar-TakeTwo for Sony’s next-gen platform would allow a perfect support to the VR, a feature expected on GTA VI, whose tuning still takes a few years.
Going back in time, we see how Rockstar has always spent several years between chapters of GTA. Between the first and the second 7 years have passed, and for the release of GTA 5 we had to wait for 2013, the year in which PlayStation 4 and Xbox One were launched. It doesn’t seem that the software house has followed strict timelines, but rather that it has published the new games only when ready for launch.
However, the development of GTA VI is a special case. GTA 5 is the most successful title in the series and one of the best-selling videogames of all time with 85 million copies worldwide. Thanks to the multiplayer mode GTA Online, it has become even more popular, making the publisher earn millions of dollars a year.
This is also the main reason why the GTA VI studio Rockstar North has temporarily put aside new projects to focus on producing new content in the online mode. In this perspective there is no hurry to release Grand Theft Auto 6: business is going great, and if RDR 2 will have a similar success to GTA V and Online, then it will be counterproductive to cannibalize the market with another great (and highly anticipated) open-world.
GTA 6 PS5: Does Sony Buy Rockstar?
In March 2019 GTA 6 returned to make people talk about itself following the rumors that Sony would like to acquire Take Two, which in its catalog, in addition to the GTA saga, also boasts titles such as Red Dead Redemption and NBA 2K.
The rumor comes from a report by MarketWatch, Dow Jones’ website of economic and financial information, taken from Joel Kulina, Wedbush Securities analyst. A note reads that “Take-Two Interactive Software shares have increased by 4.7% as a result of rumours that Sony Corp. is in advanced negotiations for the acquisition.
The analyst indicated that Take Two’s shares would be valued at $130 each. However, the sources have stated that these are simple market speculations, and there is no concrete evidence to support a possible acquisition of the publisher by Sony. At the moment, therefore, the possibility of GTA 6 coming out as exclusive to PS4 and PS5 can be considered nothing more than a rumour.
GTA 6: Settings, Maps and Cities
According to anticipations from sources close to Rockstar Games, the developers are thinking of completely revolutionizing the scenarios that have made the history of GTA, setting the game in Tokyo.
Rumors dating back a few months, in fact, had reported of some developers traveling to the Japanese city to collect information on the spot for “a new game”. We don’t know if it was GTA 6, but it would be great news for players. Japan, however, would be a feat because it would mean reshape the entire layout of the cities, so different from the American, cars and clothing.
It’s easier for Grand Theft Auto 6, as well as previous titles, to end up being set in the United States. This is also confirmed by the words of Vice President Dan Houser, who told the Guardian: “My personal impression is that GTA is America”.
According to some rumors, the history of the new chapter will develop in Vice City, Miami, with some missions in South America and the Caribbean. Is there any reason to believe this rumor? Is Vice City really a good setting for the new GTA? The studio isn’t known for its extraordinary creativity when it comes to settings: Rockstar has reused both Liberty City and Los Santos in GTA 4 and 5, so it wouldn’t be absurd to think that they could decide to reuse an already visited location.
Rockstar boss Leslie Benzies talked about the idea of connecting multiple cities in previous GTAs in a single chapter. This means that GTA 6 could be even bigger and include really old locations already seen, with trips between San Andreas and Vice City on huge maps.
Extending the missions to two new and complete cities would be an interesting news and since we talk about Tokyo would be great to imagine two Japanese cities, perhaps connected by high-speed trains, or a gameplay that forces the protagonists to make frequent trips to missions between the United States and the Rising Sun. In addition, players would like to be able to change the appearance of the characters before starting the mission, so as to make the protagonists more similar to themselves or according to personal taste.
Also, given how long we’ll have to wait to play the new GTA 6, it’s fair to wish for augmented reality compatibility. Imagine what it would be like to play Grand Theft Auto with a VR viewer. In addition to being plausible, this update may prove inevitable. Think of VR optimisation for Batman or Gran Turismo.
GTA 6: Characters & Cars
GTA V is one of the best video games available for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, but the whole Grand Theft Auto saga is a must for lovers of the genre.
In addition to the graphics, which is appreciated along the way, the missions and possibilities, the most interesting anticipations on GTA 6 concern the protagonists and the cars.
It has long been rumored that for the first time a female protagonist will arrive in the GTA universe, and Rockstar Games has also expressed its opinion in this regard. Dan Houser, during an interview given several months ago, has not discarded the hypothesis of introducing a female character in the plot, despite the fact that the male protagonists will continue to be the focus.
For this reason we expect that if there will be a woman among the main characters, she will have a minor role or will be playable only for a part of the story or for some missions in which the choice of different protagonists is expected.
The entry of a female character would avoid other accusations such as those in 2014, after the release of the fifth installment, made by feminist associations that heavily accused the developers of GTA for the treatment of women in the game, accusations that led to the censorship of GTA V for the Australian market, triggering protests by players.
Will there always be three main characters, as happened in GTA 5 with Franklin Clinton, Michael De Santa and Trevor Philips? At the moment, mouths sewn. However, we are quite sure that the stories of the protagonists of GTA 5 are over, considering that they have never entered the DLC of GTA 5, but let’s expect that in GTA 6 some faces, names and places already known will appear – even if only a fleeting appearance – if only to wink at the player.
As for cars, what will we see in GTA 6? GTA Online currently supports drivers, tuners, rallies, saloons, off-road vehicles, bicycles, emergency vehicles, a jetpack and even a car inspired by the Batmobile. In the next important title we could then see this and much more.
